Hello Parents!
I have been posting homework on the Edmodo site so that it is accessible at home. This is only one way we have been incorporating technology into our everyday learning! Please consider viewing the Half Day Student Resources page for fun math links and web based games at http://halfdaylinks.weebly.com/math.html.
You can find great websites for other academic areas on the Half Day Student Resources page as well! Another neat technological piece we have added is the ability to print math homework through the Envisions website. The link to Envisions is https://www.pearsonsuccessnet.com/snpapp/login/PsnLandingPage.jsp?showLandingPage=true. Once on the web site, your child can enter his/her username and password. When you have entered the site, click on the icon of the open book. On the left side you will see some menus. Click on Student Resources to find the homework sheets. I have shown the students how to do this a few times so should be able to get to the assignment once they are on this part of the website. Students may also view lessons we have covered in class for extra review.
I look forward to celebrating Valentine's Day with the students tomorrow! It is Pajama Day so have your child show school spirit with his/her best jammies!

Hello Parents!
There is one week left until Winter Break! Please remember that the December book reports are due on the Friday before Winter Break. Remind your child to pace him/herself in order to avoid feeling frustrated or overwhelmed.
You may have noticed that I included math homework in this week's Friday Folders. This is to help communicate assignments that your child is missing. Also, it is a chance to review any concepts that your child is having difficulty with. Although I will not always include homework in the Friday Folder, I may choose to do so once in a while to help my students understand the importance of completing homework on time and with their best effort. Thank you for your support in this!

Hello Parents!
We will be moving away from printed spelling lists to using Spelling City for our lists and as a resource to learn and practice our spelling words. If your child does well on the pretest (90% or above), he/she may move on the Challenge List. Otherwise, your child should be studying the Regular list. All lists follow the same spelling pattern for the week. If you would like a printed list, you may print one out from your child's Spelling City account or have your child ask me for a copy. I hope everyone enjoyed their Columbus Day Holiday!

Hello Parents,
We introduced Edmodo to the class this week. So far, your children have gone on to the site and have completed several assignments. I received a compliment from Mrs. Ristow (our Technology coordinator) on the fabulous job my students were doing on being good digital citizens. The students are loving the opportunity to interact with their classmates outside the walls of school and I am finding it a great way to connect with them as well! Edmodo usernames and passwords are the same as the google drive usernames and passwords and can be found in your child's folder.
Please remember to sign and return the Friday Folder sheet after you have reviewed your child's work with him/her. It is a great habit to look over your child's work and have him/her correct any mistakes on tests, quizzes, and assignments.
We have taken our last few spelling tests on spellingcity.com. To view your child's score on his/her pretests or tests, you can login to spellingcity and click on the "my records" tab in the right hand corner. This should pull up all of your child's tests as well as the words your child has missed on his/her pretests and tests. You will also find that there are three spelling lists for each lesson. The students pretest on the "regular" list and then depending on their frustration/success level, they may move on to either the modified list or the challenge list. Your child should know what list he/she should be studying from the week depending on his/her score from the pretest.
As always, I am available via email or phone if you have any questions/concerns you would like to communicate to me! I'd like to wish you a wonderful weekend with your families!

This is just a reminder that book reports and the Book Poster project are due Monday, September 30th. If your child has not begun these two assignments, please encourage him/her to get started so that he/she is not overwhelmed over the weekend!
I wanted to also share a website that has all the Story Town resources online including the stories, vocabulary words, and focus skills. This might be helpful if you would like your child to review the story from the week or have extra fluency practice at home. It can also be helpful when I assign extended response questions or other comprehension questions that require the use of the book! The web address is http://www-k6.thinkcentral.com/content/hsp/reading/storytown/na/gr4/se_9780153597763_/grade4/shell.html?grade=4

Due to a glitch in Xtra Math program, I issued new usernames and passwords today. I also adjusted levels according to what your child said he/she already completed in his/her previous account. If there is a level or topic that you feel would suit your child better, please let me know. Also, we will not be purchasing membership to the iXL online math program through the school. However, iXL offers free online access to a limited amount of math practice which is a great resource for practicing and relearning concepts! Please encourage your child to practice math concepts on this site!
Homework has been fairly easy the past few days but please do not forget that book reports and the book poster are due on September 30th! Now would be a great time to catch up on those projects.
Also, a new enrichment opportunity is now available!
"Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White is urging students in grades 4 through 12 to enter the 2014 "Letters About Literature" contest, a national reading and writing competition sponsored by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress and the Illinois Center for the Book. This contest invites students to read a book of their choice and write a letter to the author about how the book changed their life or view of the world. One Illinois winner will be selected for each level and receive a $200 cash award and will be invited to an awards ceremony in Springfield. The deadline to enter the competition is Friday, January 10, 2014. State winners will be announced in April 2013."
If you are interested in having your child participate in this competition, please let me know and I will provide you with entry guidelines.

Hello Parents!
I will be using this page as a place to communicate any announcements that I have for our class. Please check back regularly to see if there is any news!
I will be changing the due dates for the Learning Logs starting this week. All logs will be due on Thursday of each week. Spelling tests will also happen on Thursdays and new words will go home on Friday. This week's logs and spelling words will reflect this new schedule. Since we are beginning a new routine, this week's logs will be due next Thursday, September 19th, with an added 40 minutes of reading and 30 minutes of math. The new spelling list will be given on Friday so students will have a few days to rest and review previous words or their vocabulary words. Please also encourage your child to look up any spelling words he/she does not know the meaning of. In class, we discussed how meaningless it is to master the spelling of a word if it is never used!
Please also remember that 2 book reports are due every month. The Book Report forms can be picked up by your child at any time during the day from the Book Report bin. Please encourage your child to pace him/herself so that they are not overwhelmed at the end of the month.
Book Posters are due on September 30th! Students will need to use a poster board with dimensions of 22x28. I look forward to viewing all of the wonderful art work!
